About
HKJC Form Edge is a statistical form-study aid for Hong Kong racing. It shows model win/place probabilities alongside the market and highlights runners where our estimate differs from the market's. It is not a tipster service and not a way to make money betting.
How the model works
A gradient-boosted classifier is trained on roughly three seasons of HK form: speed and class ratings, sectional performance, draw, jockey and trainer effects, weight carried, going, distance and course. Probabilities are calibrated so that a "20% chance" horse wins close to 20% of the time in the long run.
The "Model − Market" figure compares our model probability to the market's implied probability after removing the tote's take-out (de-vigging). It is presented as an informational gap — not a signal that the horse is mispriced or should be backed.
How accurate is it? (honest backtest results)
We tested this model on 1,501 unseen races and 18,619 simulated place bets across roughly three years (2023–2026). The results are humbling and worth reading before you use anything this app shows you.
- • Our model (place): ~0.152
- • Market (place): ~0.151
We match the market. We do not beat it.
- • Bet every runner: −23%
- • Back the market favourite: −13.4%
- • Back our top model pick: −13.3%
- • Back our "value" (positive-edge) picks: −18%
No strategy was profitable. Returns did not improve as our model's edge grew — the "value" filter actually did worse than following the favourite.
Plain-English conclusion: the HKJC market is highly efficient. This tool is a well-calibrated second opinion and form-study aid — not a way to make money. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
Responsible play
Predictions are estimates, not guarantees. Every race has a large random component; even the best-priced horses lose most of the time.
The HKJC WIN pool take-out is around 17.5%. That is a large structural house edge — over any meaningful sample of bets, most players lose money, and our own backtest confirms this model does not overcome it.
Do not treat anything in this app as a betting recommendation. If you bet, bet only what you can afford to lose and treat it as entertainment.
